References
Principle references consulted in the production of this decal sheet. NB [Letters] are linked to photographic references under each option:
[A] Salmson 2A2 by Jon Guttman, Windsock Datafile 109, Albatros Publications, 2005
[B] Salmson Aircraft of World War I by Colin Owers, Jon S. Guttman and James Davilla, Flying Machines Press, 2001
[C] French Aircraft of the First World War, by Dr.James J.Davilla & Arthur M.Soltan, Flying Machines Press, 1997.
[D] Les escadrilles de l’aéronautique militaire française, symbolic et histoire 1912-1920, prepared and published by the Service Historique de l’Armée de l’Air.
A special word of appreciation for this massive 600-page French-language tome; it lists all the French units in service during the First World War, with colour illustrations of their emblems and a host of photographs of the aircraft flown and the pilots who flew them. Also included are details of the aircraft and airfields used, commanding officers, awards won, personnel losses and brief historical details for each unit. It is difficult for the neophyte to comprehend the sheer variety and scope of the unit heraldry employed by France’s predecessor of the Armée de l’Air and this single volume served as a tremendous inspiration when compiling these two decal sets for the Salmson 2A2. Priced (as at 2013) at a very reasonable €77.00, this is THE reference for anyone interested in the units involved in French military aviation’s formative years.
[E] Website “Les Escadrilles Francaises de la Grande Guerre”
Also worthy of appreciative comment is this remarkable “work in progress”:
http://albindenis.free.fr
click on the top logo “Les escadrilles francaises de la Grande Guerre”.
Chock full of incredibly detailed information and a host of wonderful period photographs. It is true to say that a number of the marking options on the two French Salmson decal sets owe their existence either partly or in many cases, solely, to the references this site provides. The site’s author deserves your support; hours of happy browsing!

Acknowledgements
We have already offered our heartfelt thanks to Wingnut Wings for this magnificent kit, their first French subject and let’s hope that others will follow; we already have a couple of British pushers in their lineup, how wonderful if we were able to add a Farman, a Voisin or a Breguet-Michelin or two!
These marking decals could not have been created without the excellent references listed in the preceding section and the impeccable craftsmanship of Ray Horwell at Fantasy Printshop.
