As always, these decals could not have been produced or the histories of the machines and pilots compiled without the prodigious research and writings of the many specialist authors on the subject and all the information contained herein is taken from their published sources. In particular the Windsock Datafile is a great ‘one-stop’ resource.
For the full story of the three Kest 5 D.III’s which flew to Switzerland two days after the cessation of hostilities, we are indebted to Peter Thierstein of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. His diligent digging into primary sources has clarified much about these machine’s identities and markings and the story surrounding their arrival in Switzerland.
I am also very grateful to Swiss historian and author Georg Hoch whose superb book (see above) was presented to me at the Telford IPMS UK show this year. This clarified the markings for option 12 and introduced us to the intriguing world of Swiss aviation history and markings – fertile ground for some future Pheon decal sets, I’m sure!
- SSW D.III-D.IV by P M Grosz, Datafile No.29, Albatros Productions, 1991.
- Above the Lines by Norman Franks, Frank W.Bailey & Russel Guest. Grub Street, 1993.
- The Jasta Pilots by Norman Franks, Frank W.Bailey & Rick Duiven, Grub Street, 1996.
- Jagdgeschwader Nr.II, Geschwader ‘Berthold’ by Greg Van Wyngarden, Osprey Publishing, 2005.
- Independent Force, The War Diary of the Daylight Squadrons of the Independent Air Force June-November 1918 by Keith Rennles, Grub Street, 2002.
- Farbebung und Kennzeichen der Schweizer Militäraviatk 1914-1950, by Georg Hoch, Eigenverlag, 2009. THE reference book for Swiss colours and markings of the period, a superb work!
- Various articles in Winsock Magazine, Over the Front and Cross &Cockade.
- Original research by Peter Thierstein of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, recorded on The Aerodrome website forum.
